Nigel Owens is recognised as one of the world’s best rugby referees. Born and bred on a council estate in Mynyddcerrig West Wales and a fluent welsh speaker Nigel first picked up the referee whistle aged 16. He now holds the current record for test matches refereed and made his World Cup debut in 2007 in France. In 2015, Nigel was appointed referee for the 2015 Rugby World Cup Final between New Zealand and Australia at Twickenham. He has also refereed a record six Pro14 finals. Aside from refereeing, Nigel is a co-presenter on S4C’s Jonathan – the rugby-themed Welsh language show hosted by Jonathan Davies. He also presents other Welsh language chat shows on S4C. He also won huge plaudits for his Desert Island Discs programme on Radio 4 hosted by Kirsty Young. In 2017 he presented the Panorama programme on Eating Disorders in Men and Boys. Nigel is also the first openly gay man to come out in professional rugby and he was named ‘Gay Sports Personality of the Year’ by gay rights group Stonewall at its annual 2007 awards ceremony in London and then the Gay Sports Personality of the Decade in 2016.  Nigel handed in his whistle in 2019 after refereeing at his fourth consecutive Rugby World Cup in Japan that year. For his work on and off the pitch in rugby and in equality, inclusiveness and mental health he was received may awards including “ An Honorary Doctorate at both Swansea 2016 and South Wales University 2018”. A Honorary Fellowship at both Cardiff Met University 2016 and Cardiff University 2016.”

Having a Veterinary degree background (Buenos Aires National University, Argentina), Fernando has been working 25 years in the dairy industry; from researcher at the Argentinean National Research Institute in Agriculture (INTA), as a Dairy Quality private advisor, to different positions at DeLaval Argentina and DeLaval International AB.

During the last 15 years at DeLaval International and now at DDW, Fernando has been leading teams always connected to herd management software, cow sensors and feeding related solutions, from product development to marketing and sales.

Chris is an agricultural journalist, market analyst and consultant specialising in the dairy sector.

 

He has written for the main UK monthly magazines for around 25 years on all aspects of the dairy supply chain from primary production down on the farm through to the economics and politics at processor, retailer and consumer level.

 

He writes the fortnightly dairy market report for The Provision Trade Federation, and a monthly comment column on the industry in British Dairying, among other articles.

Our Semex conference is fortunate to have secured Chris time to come back again for the 2022 conference, by popular demand.

STUART'S STORY

Stuart farms 400 hectares in Hertfordshire and Kent in partnership with his wife Emma and father Howard.  A third generation arable and livestock farmer at Hammonds End Farm, Harpenden Stuart has also worked for Defra and the Food Standards Agency and held senior management roles within the meat supply chain.

The farm incorporates around 300 hectares of combinable crops supplying grain to more than 50 artisan mills and bakers throughout the UK.  The remaining land is predominately permanent pasture and a small amount of woodland.  The farm includes two cattle herds, a commercial Simmental / Hereford herd producing 14 month old store cattle and a small but growing pedigree herd of Hereford cattle.  The business also includes a small flock of laying hens.

Stuart has served as Hertfordshire NFU County Chairman since 2015 and has served on both the East Anglian livestock and combinable crops board.  Stuart has previously served on the boards of Red Tractor and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board. 

Prior to returning to the family farm Stuart had a career in the civil service with the Food Standards Agency and Defra and has held a number of positions within the red meat supply chain with both the British Meat Processors Association and the ABP Food Group.

Stuart has a daughter and three sons and enjoys cycling and running (slowly).
